Tras mi viaje a Sao Paulo donde nos reunimos la Sociedad Roth-Williams FACE, trabajé un par de semanas y de nuevo salí de casa y esta vez camino a Holanda. Estuve en la ciudad de Harleem, que es una ciudad preciosa, muy pintoresca y muy holandesa con sus canales y sus puentes, y está a pocos kilómetros de Ámsterdam. Es como si fuera un barrio periférico de la ciudad de Ámsterdam. Allí fui a hablar a la Sociedad Holandesa de Prostodoncia.
Es mi tercera conferencia en Holanda en poco tiempo pero esta vez no para ortodoncistas sino para prostodoncistas. La razón principal es que cada día hay más prostodoncistas que buscan ortodoncistas que tengan en cuenta la oclusión. Es curioso ver como a nivel internacional, país donde vaya y donde haya prostodoncistas presentes, se quedan maravillados y felices cuando oyen hablar a un ortodoncista de oclusión. Muchos están desesperados porque no saben con quién trabajar porque la mayoría de ortodoncistas con quien trabajan desprecian la oclusión, y eso para un prostodoncista es impensable. En fin…
Yo les hablé de qué es lo que la ortodoncia puede hacer para ellos, es decir, ortodoncia pre-protésica, donde comenté la importancia de una buena ortodoncia para poder acabar bien un caso prostodóncico. Hablé sobre el desarrollo del lecho implantario para crear hueso y luego colocar implantes. También hablé sobre la creación de papilas, es decir, con movimientos ortodóncicos crear papilas, cosa que para un prostodoncista es imprescindible, y acabé hablando sobre el uso de implantes como fuente de anclaje ortodóncico para corregir Clases II y mordidas abiertas.
Tuve muchísimo éxito y en la reunión hubo más de 200 prostodoncistas y quedaron tan satisfechos que me han vuelto a invitar para la reunión del año que viene. Así que ya veis que la ortodoncia en conjunto con la oclusión sigue siendo interesante, pero no para ortodoncistas, sino para prostodoncistas. “Qué triste”.

Hello everyone, it’s me again.
After my trip to Sao Paulo where the Roth-Williams FACE Society had their annual meeting, I worked for a couple of weeks, and then I left home again…this time to Holland. I went to Haarlem, which is a beautiful city. It is very quaint and typically Dutch with its canals and bridges. It is just a few kilometres from Amsterdam, so it is like a suburb. I went there to talk to the Dutch Prosthodontics Society.
It’s my third conference in the Netherlands in a short period time, but this time it was for prosthodontists, not orthodontists. The main reason for this is that there are increasingly more prosthodontists looking for orthodontists who take occlusion into account. It is funny how internationally, in whatever country where there are prosthodontists, they are amazed and delighted to hear an orthodontist speak about occlusion. Many are desperate because they do not know who to work with, because most of the orthodontists who they work with despise occlusion, which is unthinkable for a prosthodontist.
I told them about what orthodontics can do for them, i.e. pre-prosthetic orthodontics. I mentioned the importance of good orthodontics in order to finish a prosthodontic case well. I talked about the development of the implant site to create bone and then inserting implants where the new bone was created. I also talked about the creation of papillae, i.e. orthodontic movement to create papillae, which is essential for a prosthodontist, and I ended by talking about the use of implants as an orthodontic anchorage to correct Class II and open bites.
I was extremely successful. More than 200 prosthodontists attended the conference, and they were so pleased that I have been invited back for next year’s conference. So you see that orthodontics in conjunction with occlusion is still interesting, unfortunately not for orthodontists, but for prosthodontists. How unfortunate.
